A VERY NICE TRENCH WATCH. THIS IS A 1910 SILVER BORGEL WITH A 13.56 LONGINES MOVEMENT WITH SPONSOR MARK FOR ARTHUR BAUME WHO WAS LONGINES AGENT IN THE UK.
THE WATCH IS WORKING AND KEEPING EXCELLENT TIME. IT IS AN 18 JEWEL CAL 13.56, REASONABLY RARE IN A WRISTWATCH.
IT IS 36MM NOT INCLUDING THE LUGS OR CROWN.
IT WOULD HAVE HAD SWING LUGS BUT THESE HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO FIXED LUGS.
NICE TO SEE WATCH MAKER REPAIR MARKS INSIDE THE CASE.
THE MOVEMENT AND CASE NUMBERS MATCH.
THE WATCH IS ENGRAVED TO THE REAR JG FOR JOHN (IAN) GILLILAND.
INSIDE THE CASE IT IS ENGRAVED I.M.GILLILAND ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION.
IT IS COMMON FOR SCOTTISH JOHNS TO BE CALLED IAN AS IS THE CASE HERE.
THIS WATCH BELONGED TO LIEUTENANT COMMANDER JOHN MULLIGAN GILLILAND WHO SAW ACTION IN THE SOMME AND IT IS REASONABLE TO SUGGEST HE WORE THIS WATCH IN BATTLE.
HE MOVED TO THE NAVY PUBLICITY DEPT AND THE INTELLIGENCE SECTION.
HE WAS WOUNDED AND SURVIVED THE WAR.
I HAVE INCLUDED SOME OF HIS WAR RECORDS BELOW.
THIS IS AN EARLY RARE WATCH IN ITS OWN RIGHT WITHOUT THE MILITARY HISTORY.
1910 AND EARLIER WRISTWATCHES DO NOT BECOME AVAILABLE VERY OFTEN OF THIS QUALITY.
PLEASE SEE THE PICTURES BELOW.
